Follicular Unit Extraction FUE

The FUE procedure is the less invasive hair transplant with no scars or traces in the donor area and a minimized postoperative trauma.

<FUE>

FUE was introduced to the hair transplant community in 2004.

At the time, surgeons were looking for new way to expand the donor area and use the temple area for transplantation. Indeed, the FUE expands by 30 to 50% the donor area and thus the number of grafts available.

<greffe FIT>Individual follicular units are selectively removed from the back and sides of the scalp as they are moved to the front, top, and crown of the scalp.

Our clinics only use manual micro-surgical punchs (in diameter between 0,75 and 1,0 mm) to ensures that each follicular group of hair is precisely removed one by one without damage to the surrounding skin. The punch is inserted into the skin and is stopped as it enters the coarse reticular dermis and before it enters the softer subcutaneous fat.

During 15 days after the operation, the patient has some crust and red spots that will dissapear forever after this initial period.

The hair is usually trimmed at 2mm length to ensure the surgeon a good vision of the grafts. For operation below 1500 grafts, we can only trim a small portion of the scalp which is hidden by surrounded hair. That way the patient can keep his/ her hairstyle.

FUE versus FUT or can both methods even be combined ?

<FUE>Both methods are only dedicated to provide donor supply, which then will be transplanted to the thinning and bald parts.

The perfect cosmetic result of a hair transplant procedure is depending much more on a lot of other factors like the artistry of hairline design the naturalness of transplanted hairs or the ability to produce density.

We believe: Both extraction methods are useful as long as they are performed by experienced Doctors and their teams which are specialized on Hair Transplantation procedures. This is why we select and offer only surgeons who we test and approve by knowing and witnessing their work in the operation theater.

That way you can be insured of the work that is being done on YOUR head!

  • How else can you be sure of:
  • The type of graft that are harvested?
  • The artistic abilty of the surgeon?
  • His capacity to implant with density?

Follicular Unit Extraction should be chosen for:
1. The patient who later might desire a very short hair style.

Especially younger patient want to keep the freedom to carry out any kind of hair style, even a very short one, when it’s the time of fashion. If the length of the hair after a hair cut is desired to be less then 0,5 cm the fine line of the scar can be detectable.

FUE donor area

2. The patient who wants the least invasive surgery.

Healing and recovery period of the donor area is much faster. The graft extraction is simple, painless, and the donor area heals within 2-4 days. There is NO risk of nerve damage.

3. The patient who needs a small or a corrective work to the recipient area.

With this minimally invasive procedure small transplantations or corrections in the recipient area  should only be performed by Follicular Extraction

4. The patient who has been left with unacceptable old strip scars.

Strip scars, which have been performed by some Doctors  are resulting in wide unacceptable scars. With FUE the repair can be done without resulting a new scar.

5. The patient who simply does not want to have any scar.

6. The patient who has not sufficient donor supply.
Follicular Units Extraction widens the area of donor supply significantly. Especially, when body areas as chest and back are also used for the transplantation process. see our BHT page.
